I have a special guest today that many all know and love. For some of us born in the 70’s, I remember his movies as being something that, or at least in my case, were movies my parents wouldn’t allow us to watch. He has been on both of my other shows and he is one of the nicest, loving, genuine, and caring person I know.
When I decided to stay off meth and clean up my life, I went to school to study psychology and become a substance abuse counselor. The study of Psychology was exciting to me and certain theorists opened my eyes to certain things that helped me see the world differently. Abraham Maslow, who was a humanistic psychologist, brought about that hierarchy of needs. He believed that individuals are motivated to fulfill their potential in life.
I decided to diagnose Tommy and see if he fit the picture of a self-actualizer. Let’s see if he is someone who is a human being, has flaws, is genuine and not care what others think. Does he focus on the bigger picture and have a purpose where he won’t give up.
I talk with clients about motivation and that we are all motivated by one of two ways, the first is by moving away from painful experiences. The second is by moving towards something good or something better in your life. For a substance abuser, the pain eventually goes away when they get clean but that second motivation is what lasts. Dreams, visions, passions, excitement. They know where they are headed and have an idea of how to get there.
The reason I decided to do this was, as I explain in the beginning, is he is someone who has a real spark in life. He is genuine, caring, loving, and someone who had to fight hard to accomplish the things he has accomplished. Many people think how easy it is to be famous and have lots of money but a lot of people fail to understand the blood, sweat, and tears it takes to get there. As you can also tell, if you have never listened to him before is that he has very interesting ideas about things that hopefully inspire someone. Most people know who Tommy Chong is and I thought it would be fun to bring him on this show.
