People who suffer from alcoholism are up to 120 times more likely to take their own life than those who are not dependent on alcohol. Alcohol can lower a person’s inhibitions enough for them to act on suicidal thoughts. It suppresses activity in parts of the brain associated with inhibition.
Any warning signals that may have kicked in if a person was sober are unlikely to work, which can lead to actions they might not otherwise have taken – including self-harm and suicide. it has been found that nearly 1/3 of suicide deaths have been linked to alcohol consumption. There is also an average of 130 suicides every day.
There are many people in our country and the world who are suffering. From April 2020 to April of 2021; we had an estimated 100,306 overdose deaths. That is an increase of 28 and a half percent from the 12-month period prior to this according to the centers from disease control and prevention.
Just to add more fatalities to the mix, an approximately 95,000 died from alcohol related causes which has been the third leading cause of preventable death. This is the first time; I am aware that overdose deaths have passed alcohol related deaths which now makes overdose the third leading cause of preventable death.
